About Online Pixel Art
A free tool that turns any photo or picture into pixel art, right in your browser.
Online Pixel Art is an independent project with one goal: make it quick and easy to turn an image into pixel art you're actually happy with. Upload a picture, pick a size and a palette, and download a crisp PNG. There's no account, no watermark and no limit on how many images you convert.
Why it exists
Drawing pixel art by hand takes hours, and a quick filter often gives blurry, muddy results. We wanted a converter that gives faithful, sharp results, shows you every option that matters, and never uploads your pictures anywhere.
How it works
The converter runs entirely in your web browser. When you add an image, it never leaves your device: there is no upload and no server processing.
- Downscaling. Your image is shrunk to the pixel size you choose, averaging each area into one solid color.
- Color reduction. Colors are matched in OKLab, a color space that models how the human eye sees color, so faces, pets and places stay recognizable with only a few colors. You can let the tool pick the best colors automatically or use a retro or custom palette.
- Dithering. Optional Floyd–Steinberg or ordered dithering suggests in-between shades, the same trick classic 8-bit and 16-bit games used.
- Sharp export. Downloads are enlarged by whole numbers, so every pixel stays a crisp square.
There's no AI involved. The same image with the same settings always gives the same result, and nothing is invented that wasn't in your original picture.
What we care about
- Free. Every feature is free to use, with no sign-up. Ads keep it that way.
- Private. Your images stay on your device. Read the privacy policy for the details.
- Yours. The pixel art you make is yours to use, including commercially, as long as you have the right to use the original image.
- Fast and simple. It works on phones, tablets and computers, with nothing to install.
Credits
Custom palette import uses the public palette list at Lospec, home to thousands of palettes made by the pixel art community. Retro palette names such as Game Boy, PICO-8 and Commodore 64 refer to the systems whose colors they recreate; they belong to their respective owners, who aren't affiliated with this site.
The site is built with open-source software, including Astro, React, Tailwind CSS, shadcn/ui and Lucide icons, and uses the Geist, Pixelify Sans and DotGothic16 typefaces.
